The project's location by the coastline of a manmade peninsula where it'd be very noticeable, predetermined the building's need to become an iconic element. The feat was accomplished by creating a roof reminiscent of a pair of butterfly wings, which lights up in different colors depending on the play or opera that's being performed on the inside.
On the inside, a series of light columns support the roof and give the lobby an almost eerie look; the use of bamboo on interior finishes is also patent throughout the whole theater, and it's an integral part of the auditorium's ceiling which consists of fifteen thousand bamboo blocks, individually shaped to adapt to the auditorium's acoustic needs.
