Tate Modern/Switch House extension - Interior

Herzog & de Meuron originally transformed the Bankside Power Station into UK's first international modern and contemporary art in 2000. This new phase opens to a new 10-story building to the south of the Turbine Hall of the original museum where special commissions and events takes place, where it is rooted in the cylindrical underground tanks, measuring over 30 meters across providing the world's first museum spaces for live art, installation and film.

Then, the new spaces take the shape of a unique pyramid-shaped tower, with concrete structure folding into dramatic lines as it rises. There is new brickwork that clad in a perforated lattice of 336,000 bricks which let light filer in during the day and glow out in the evening like a veil.

Another contextual tie to the original museum are the thin vertical windows in the new galleries which allow visitors to look out over the landscape. These windows cut across the facade to offer new views and details of the brickwork.
