Behind the obvious beauty of this carved marvel lies a deeply spiritual concept. This chapel was created in order to showcase the lush material culture of Japan. Not only is it designed to interpret the balance of life and space, it actually facilitates the flow of air and light. Light that filters through the wooden panels casts a shadow on chapel floor, like sunlight through trees.
Movement of air is associated with breathing, which all humans, animals and plants do. We are all living creatures here to live, grow and reproduce. The tree motif used on the panels was sourced from traditional kimono patterns that symbolize various flowers and plants. Trees are known all over the world as a place of solace, fraternity and shelter.
