Brick walls add an old world charm to the interiors making the room feel cozy. However, you want to make sure that there's no crumpling mortar due to the exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures over time. Clean the brick, repair the damaged areas on the wall, try colorwash.

Whatever you do, don't assume that Portlsnd cement mortar or stucco is the answer. Portland cement repairs destroy brickwork. Use traditional lime/sand mixes. These allow the wall to breathe properly and do not crack as walks make microscopic movements over time.

Colorwash on brick is similar to colorwash on the walls which is to thin down the paint so that the base color shows through.
