Most buildings are experimental prototypes reliant sadly on low-bid contractors, self-styled "value engineers" and a bevy of subcontractors some of whom have little in the way of real skills or craftsmanship. Imagine what buildings would be like if we took best practices from companies like Boeing, Tesla, Apple and a host of other greats and applied them in their entirely to the provision of human habitats?

We'd be a lot less worried about "style" and one heck of lot more concerned about the performance of structures as shelters against climatic extremes, and habitats that enable human beings to pursue healthy and fulfilling lives, whatever the building type may be or the endeavors the occupants are pursuing..

Great question, @ajkim. I think a lot of focus would be on environmental efforts, subtle designs with more utility than physical looks.

Design Mmm? Huge question, Depends what you mean. Designer clothes, architectural, furniture, NASA, pharma (drugs), spectacles, automotive, transport in general, vacuum cleaners, toilet brushes, London buses....etc. etc all related all relevant. Cross fertilisation of ideas by cross pollinator designers, blurring boundaries, trained to draw at art school designers will be the way of the future of design, silo schools must adapt, pigeon holed definer designers must change, the method of teaching and learning must adapt. Multicultural, bi- i-lingual, transgender designers will defragment the system and remodel it. Be prepared or suffer the consequences. Design is dead, long live design. chris radcliffe
