There's a new iPhone out, everyone on the planet has heard about that. However we want to look more closely at the really exciting bit for all of us with a slight case of digital 3D obsession.
Apple's latest iOS 6 release brings a whole new maps app to iPhone and iPad which has full browsable 3D maps built in. Currently the feature only supports a few major city centres, however we are sure this will quickly grow.
The 3D models are constructed using an amazing technology which takes hi-res photos from thousands of angles from a plane as it flies over the city, these photos then create a point cloud to construct 3D models. From here photo realistic textures are applied to the models giving an amazingly photo realistic representation.
Similar technologies that piece together photos have existed for a while, such as Autodesk's great 123D Catch http://www.123dapp.com/catch which lets anyone create a 3D model from photos. However to see this applied to a whole city is pretty amazing.
Here are some screenshots of the cities we've visited in the new iOS 6 maps (they load extremely fast too), what other ones have you visited?
