As you probably know you can't back save in Revit unfortunately.
But what you can do is take the CAD Model and insert it in to your own new Revit Family.
You will be able to assign colours and materials through the visibility/graphic override.
You can do this in either the Family or the project.
Just make a note of the name of the layers in AutoCAD so you can easily identify them in Revit. I have give each component individual names so you shouldn't have a problem with them.
